Whilst Windows has a wealth of free open-source software compatible with modern devices, MacOS comparatively has a handful of astro developers who only support a small subset of astro hardware, and the majority of these are commercial products.īecause APT relies on ASCOM to talk to your astro hardware, and ASCOM does not exist on the MacOS platform, the ONLY way to use APT with all it’s features on Mac hardware is to install a copy of Windows, and set up all your Astro hardware to function in Windows with Windows software. If you feel insulted by that, I’m afraid it’s time to suck it up. Ultimately, MacOS is currently approaching being semi-useless for modern Astro purposes unless you’re technically minded enough not to need this guide in the first place. Asked if I could knock up a post on using APT on MacOS due to the frequency of times it comes up, so here goes!īefore I begin: If you’re an Apple fanboy who refuses to touch Windows, then the simple answer is: buy something else instead of APT
